Talk Talk - I believe in you (by Pedrogm85)

Before you play two notes learn how to play one note - and don’t play one note unless you’ve got a reason to play it.

– Mark Hollis

Of all the emotions listening to good music, being haunted might be my favorite. Of all the haunting music, this one is The Great Pumpkin, the most haunting and haunted of them all.

In 2009, M83 played these instrumentals as part of a joint performance with the LA Philharmonic Orchestra at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. They were recorded from an appearance on KCRW Morning Become Eclectic.

Track 1 is a swelling, ambient intro, full of strings and woodwinds. Track 2 is a slow churning electronic piece, synthesizers and sine waves. Track 3 all reverb and echo. Track 4 begins with lilting harp arpeggios, then grows into standard M83 synth & percussive affair. Track 5 is the real gem. A long study on a pulsating loop, ever building, accumulating layers and thin veils of counter melodies and atmosphere. It sounds at once placid and frantic.

These tracks are isolated in the M83’s canon. While they share a link as instrumentals to the ambient drones of Digital Shades, they have more structure, pointing to the interludes of Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. I’ve never heard them anywhere else. Making them all the more precious.
